UnixBench results: Linode, Tilaa, Hetzner
Frederic Cambus March 08, 2012 [Linux]As announced in a previous post, here are the results of my UnixBench tests. I've been benchmarking VPSes from Linode (Xen virtualization) and Tilaa (KVM virtualization), along with a dedicated server from Hetzner.
Here are the details of each tested configuration:
- Linode: 512MB of RAM, 4 virtual CPUs, 20GB Storage
- Tilaa: 256MB of RAM, 1 virtual CPU, 10GB Storage (RAID 10)
- Hetzner: Root Server X2, 2GB of RAM, 1 physical CPU, 320GB Storage (SAMSUNG HD321KJ)
Methodology and notes:
- Each server have been freshly reinstalled before launching the tests, and no services are running
- Tests have been ran on Debian 6.0 "Squeeze" and on CentOS 6.0, both 32-bit and 64-bit versions
- The software RAID has been deactivated on the Hetzner dedicated server to avoid causing performance impact

Please note that these results should be taken cautiously, as they can vary in time (depending on host activity, more precisely disk I/O).
Some interesting facts to note however:
- Both VPS outperform the dedicated server
- Performance difference between 32 and 64-bit versions is minimal
- CentOS always score lower than Debian on all tested systems
